Flash and flambient technique

4 min read

The fundamentals

It´s often a misconception that using a flash makes the image look flash-like and automatically kills the ambient light.

We keep the shadow direction from the ambient exposures when we edit, but adapt the amount of shadows to the style and levels of Light distribution.

This page explains why a flash can be a great tool for you in Real Estate photography to get a realistic, well-lit image where the room feels bright yet with an ambient look.

What is the flambient method?

Flambient = flash + ambient.

The technique combines two kinds of shots:

  • Photos with ambient light to capture the atmosphere
  • Photos with flash to achieve neutral colors and even exposure

Merging these makes a final image that looks both natural and polished.

Why use flash?

Natural light often looks inviting, but it can create uneven exposure, strong shadows, or color shifts.

Using a supporting flash when you shoot helps to:

  1. identify the right colors and make WB
  2. make the rooms appear cleaner and more true to life in contrast
  3. reduce some of the unwanted color casts
  4. help the editor to mask window frames - important when you want Light and Enhanced view levels
  5. remove reflections or burned out areas on shiny floors or in windows
  6. recover details that are burned out by the ambient light
Shooting process

Depending on the light conditions and room layout, you may need fewer or more exposures to cover all parts of the area.

  1. First take the ambient shots. Get good exposures of the room and the window view. 1-3 shots are normally enough.
  2. Then take the flash shots. 1-3 shots are normally enough. Recommended ways:
  3. Either use a reflector, or bounce the flash off walls or ceiling for softer light
  4. take two supporting direct side flashes. Especially helpful in larger rooms.
  5. If needed take additionally enhancing shots with flash
  6. straight towards the windows, for masking and window pull - to get Light and Enhanced view.
  7. if some parts in the image still are too dark - to brighten without bringing out noise.
  8. if you have strong color casts from outside the window or any lamps that are lit - to help the editor set the white balance.
  9. on shiny floors with reflecting hard sun - to even out the hard light.
Watch out for
  • Harsh shadows – bounce flash for softer light
  • Reflections in glass and mirrors
  • Overexposed windows – balance with ambient shots for detailed views
  • Inconsistent framing – always use a tripod
Not keen on using flash?

That´s ok, we are used to handle all kinds of RAW-files.
